Our Art topic for our first half term back at school was Nature Sculptures.

We used our skills to create clay sculptures, drawings and outdoor sculptures using only natural objects!

We have been learning about mental health for Mental Health Awareness Week

We have also been learning about 2D shapes so we created some mindfulness patterns using a variety of different coloured shapes.

We have been developing our computing skills learning how to use a track pad instead of a mouse.

Coach John has helped us improve our motor skills and co-ordination in PE.

We have read stories about children who have lost their favourite toys! We have been looking at the settings of these stories as we are going to write our own stories about losing our favourite toys!

Come back soon to see how we get on with them! :)

Don't Forget!

Our celebration of learning is on Friday 14th July. Please bring back your slips to Ms James as slots are going quickly!

All parents are welcome from 1.30pm.

Certificate assembly will begin from 2.45pm

Art Week

The Future is ours...so what are you going to do about it!

To kick off our art week, we had a protest in the playground to voice our concerns that could affect us in the future.

The posters you created we brilliant.

Thank you for all your hard work!

This week we have been very busy preparing for Shrove Tuesday also known as Pancake Day!

We have used our knowledge of writing and following instructions to make pancakes. Yum!

In our next lesson, we are going to write our own instructions to inform Year R on how to make pancakes! They'll have a lot to listen to as we all made our pancakes with different toppings.

Next week is Literacy Week and our focus in on Poetry. Please read the newsletter for more information on the Poetry Slam that is taking place across the schools in the cluster.

Well done Year 1 for all your hard work so far in 2017!

Have a safe and happy half term- don't forget to complete your homework ready for

Tuesday February 21st.

Our class assembly was a huge success!

We explained the story of creation and how we think it is special to us. We spoke about how we are special and you are too!

This is because in RE our unit of learning is 'What responsibility has God given people for taking care of creation?'

We said we must look after animals and plants, care for each other and look after ourselves and our families.

This will make a very happy earth!

Thank you to all the parents who came to watch our assembly. We have received some amazing feedback.

Well done Year 1!

In English, we are learning about instructions.

Today we had to draw the pigeon from the series of books 'Don't let the pigeon stay up late' and 'Don't let the pigeon drive the bus'.

Here's some of our learning:

Our drawings are not bad right? Here is how the author and illustrator Mo Willems draws his...

We are really good, aren't we? :)

Please note our class assembly is on Friday 3rd February at 9:10am. We hope to see you there! :)

We are computer scientists!

We have learned how to log on using our username and password but shhh! Don't ask us we are not allowed to share our information.

This week we focused on mouse control and using the three options on our mouse: left click, right click and the wheel.

Then we learned about directions as this linked to our Geography topic The Earth Our Home.

Welcome back to school!

In year 1 we have settled straight into our learning by taking part in a very difficult maths challenge. The focus of our challenge was place value. We had to count every single item in the classroom to check how much of everything we had.

We counted:

  • Glue sticks
  • Cubes
  • Colouring pencils
  • Reading books
  • Scissors
  • Dice
  • ....

There were a lot!

We began by counting in ones but that took ages and we often lost track of where we counted up to!

We need to count in 5s or 10s. 2s will take a longtime as well! -AW, J-SF, OP

We then worked together as a class to collect our findings. We noticed something...Can you notice it too?

Ask a year 1 child what we learned about tens and ones by doing this activity! ;)

Measurement and Surprises!

This week we have been measuring using different units of measurements. At the beginning of the week, we began using cubes making sure we measure carefully starting and finishing in the right places.

By the end of the week, we learned about a metre stick and began to measure objects with it, sorting these objects too. We had to measure if items were taller than a metre stick or shorter than a metre stick.

In English, we received a magical letter form The Good Fairy from the story Little Rabbit Foo Foo. She needed our help to put in the missing capital letters and punctuation because she had lost her glasses!

She really needed our help because Little Rabbit Foo Foo needed to stop being naughty in the forest! It was very important that Little Rabbit Foo Foo got her letter as soon as possible.

We decided to write some of our own letters to Little Rabbit Foo Foo encouraging him to make more positive choices. In order to do this, we had to put on our yellow thinking hats!

We do hope Little Rabbit Foo Foo takes our advice!

Museum of Childhood

This week we went on our first class trip to the Museum of Childhood to learn more about toys from the past in line with our Autumn term topic: The Magic Toymaker.

When we arrived we took part in a workshop called Toys on a Timeline. We had to look at toys from different years and put them in three categories.

The three categories were:

  • Grandparent's time
  • Parents Time
  • Children today's time

We looked at different bears and dolls; we needed to put them on the timeline correctly.

We had to look at the material of the bears to see where they would go.

-MV

The minion is electronic so I know that it's a modern toy.

-KE

Then we had he opportunity to play with toys ranging from 50 years ago to today. We played Happy Families, Superhero Snap and Crokinole. We also played with dolls houses, the original Action Man and Barbie dolls and 3D glasses- they were made form paper! Some children couldn't believe it!

Then we had an opportunity to look around the museum looking at old and new toys. Some of the parent helpers took a trip down memory lane when they saw their favourite toys as children too!

We had a lovely day!

Thank you to all the parent helpers who came along, we really appreciate you sharing your time.

Its a new year, new start and new beginning!

We are the new year one! We have been very busy settling into our new classroom and getting to know our new teachers. Come and see our blog for all our learning updates, assembly news and trip information.

Have a look at the photos below where we have been very eager to begin our journey in year one...

END OF 2015/16

Celebration of Learning

As the end of the year approaches, we invited our lovely parents to come and participate in our lessons on Friday.

They joined in with us as we embarked on a journey on a pirate ship to retrieve the treasure during our Now Press Play experience.

We had to use our number bonds to 10 and 20 to unlock the code to get our treasure chest! The evil pirate nearly captured us as we hid beneath the planks of the ship!

I really love doing Now Press Play... It is so real! -KN

Its so much fun using the headphones and working out the calculations - ZD-A

This is a really enjoyable resource, it was good to see my son having fun whilst learning.- Parent

We had a lovely story time where parents volunteered to read to us.

We then invited all of our parents to come and look at the learning in our books from throughout the year. We couldn't believe how much our handwriting has improved since September! Some of us didn't realise how much we have learned and how much we have progressed.

It was really heart warming to see how proud the children were of their progress. Well done Year 1!

Thank you so much to all the parents who came and shared the day with us. We had a great time and we hope you enjoyed your day too!

Ready, Set, GO!

In PE we have been busy practising for Sports Day but we have also included some skills we have learnt throughout the year like catching, rolling, and relay racing.

We are going on a tree hunt...

This week we have been looking at deciduous and evergreen trees.

We went on a tree hunt to see all the lovely trees we are so lucky to have at Christ Church.

We nearly had all the trees that we had on our sheets! PW

I like the birch tree it's very pretty and different from the others. HK

I think deciduous is so hard to say! Most of the trees are deciduous. - ZD-A

It's Science Week!

Our focus this week has been 'changes of state'

We have looked at various materials and what happens to them when we add heat or cool them down.

On Monday we looked at what happens to bread when we heat it up. We all knew that it would make toast because most of us have it for breakfast!

What we were very interested to find out was can we change the toast back into bread by cooling it down?

...

The answer was NO!

We put the bread in the fridge but it did not change back into soft bread. - AL-B

The toast is still hard and brown. We can't change it back! - ZD-A

Later in the week we experimented with water and ice. We already knew that water changes into ice when we put it in the freezer but we wanted to find out the quickest way to melt the ice!

Our options were:

- sunlight

- fridge

- salt

- water tray

We put a marble in a balloon with some water and food colouring and then put it in the freezer...

I put mine in the salt because I see the big trucks putting salt on the floor to melt the ice when it snows. - GS

We found out that putting the iced balloons in the water melted the ice the quickest! I put mine there so I won! - MA-M

The sunlight did not melt my ice quick enough. I wish it was more of a sunny day. - PW

Next time I would like to see which way melts ice cream the quickest. That will be fun! - AL-B

FRED Celebration

On Friday we had a final celebration of FRED (Fathers Read Every Day). Thank you to the parents who came and to Mrs Tripyear who made our celebration very special.

We had story time and received our certificates. Then we ate a treat and listened to great music!

Welcome back everyone!

We hope you had a lovely Easter:) This week we started our FRED (Fathers Reading Every Day) scheme. We had a special visit from Winston and he helped us to re-tell stories through song, instruments and movement. We had a wonderful afternoon!

Have a lovely Easter break!

Stay safe and see you in April.

[22nd March 2016]

Lambeth Music Festival

Year 1 have been very lucky to take part in the Lambeth Music Festival this week! It was a very special occasion and we felt very welcome to be a part of such a fantastic event.

Can you spot us?

...

Over the past few months we have been practising various songs from different cultures to perform at the concert.

It was brilliant! I felt scared and the stage was hot but I had a very good time!

AL-B

My favourite song is Siya Humba, I love that song!

LdW

I can't believe the lady who we have watched on the videos is really here! This place is amazing I want to do it again!

AJ

Thank you very much for all the parent helpers and those who came to watch us!

 [17th March 2016]

Let's do it for Sport Relief!

This week we have been training up to run 1 mile for Sport Relief! Over the past few weeks we have asked our friends and families to sponsor us to run the distance for charity.

We have been collecting our pennies and pounds and finally today was the day that we ran the 1 mile. Just so you know, 1 mile is the equivalent to running around the playground 12 times! So that's what we did!

First, the Year 6s helped us warm up and stretch preparing our bodies for the run.

Then we were off!

It was very hard work but we didn't give up and we were still smiling by the end!

[9th March 2016]

KidZania!

Our latest class trip was to the wonderful world of KidZania in Westfields, London. We had a terrific time!

KidZania is place designed to empower children and gives them the confidence to challenge themselves and inspires them to explore the world of opportunities.

It is a huge role play area where children become the adults!

When we first arrived, we had to check in- just like a real airport.

Then, we were given 50 Kidzos to spend...

We entered the venue and it was awesome and we had to pay for some of the activities using our Kidzos. We played football in the stadium and we won 4-3! We were artists in the art gallery, DJs and we had a party on the dance floor.

We sang and got face paints and tattoos.

However, just like real adults we realised that money does not last forever! In order to get more money we had to get a job and WORK!

We became midwives, radio station Djs and talk show hosts, hairdressers, firemen, policemen and some us worked in the department store restocking the shelves!

We earned a lot of money. When we had 75Kidzos or more, we were allowed to open a bank account at the Bank of KidZania and own a credit card!

Overall, we had a tremendous day and would really LOVE to go back and visit again one day!

Thank you to the parent helpers who came with us on our fantastic day out!

[3rd March 2016]

World Book Day!

We have had a fantastic day today celebrating World Book Day in Year 1.

We had a range of book characters in our class today. Above are only some of the wonderful costumes- can you match these names to the pictures?

  • Little Pig (from the 3 little pigs)
  • Queen of Hearts (Alice in Wonderland)
  • Batman
  • Handa (Handa's Surprise)
  • Knightsmen
  • Queen Elsa

Following our homework to research the author David Wiesner, we have read one of his lovely picture books called Free Fall.

We have been busy looking at the setting of each page in the story and writing speech bubbles about how the boy is feeling and what he could be saying.

There are no words in this special book so we have to use our imagination and create our own vocabulary!

Click the play button below to see the full story:

What can you tell me about the story?

What do you see happening?

Can you create your own stage in his dream?

[26th February 2016]

Welcome back to school! We hope you have had a very restful half term.

This week we have been very busy looking at non-fiction texts in our English lessons. We researched and look at information about animals that live under or near water.

We worked in groups to find information using non-fiction books, fact sheets, iPads and the internet!

Then we had to present our information to the class...

Some of us had some questions to ask about the animals we researched.

Why do alligators have scaly skin? - AW

How do sharks smell under water? - VW

Why do whales squirt water out of their backs? - FR-T

How many types of octopus live in the sea? - ES

Year 1 Class Assembly

Just a reminder that our class assembly is this Friday 5th February.

See you there!

[01st February 2016]

A visit to the London Connected Learning Centre (CLC)

This week we were very lucky to go to the CLC where we had the opportunity to design our own game!

We used a program called Purple Mash and we created our own characters and settings to feature in our game.

We had to draw on paper 2 designs. One that made us collect points in the game and one that made us lose a life. Then we had to draw the walls we wanted. -KN

Year 1 were very good listeners and Blossom, the lady who taught us, was very impressed with our skills. She commented on our mouse control and said a lot of us had the best mouse control skills she had seen for year 1 children! Wow!

We listened carefully to the instructions Blossom gave us. She showed us how to give more lives or make it easier. She asked us if our game was for Year 6 children or Reception children or the teachers. I made mine for the teachers! -TO, GS.

Finally our games were complete and we swapped with our friends and played each others games!

As always, we are very grateful to all the parents who helped out on our trip as well as Mrs Douglas. Thank you!

 [26th January 2016]

PE: We love to dance!

This term in PE we are learning about dance. So far, we have looked at Salsa dancing, African drum dance and Bhangra.

"I really like the music in PE. It is fun and my heart beats really fast when I jump and dance." KN

"I am really flexible and I like the Bhangra music because I can bend my body" BJ

"I am flexible too and I like to do the crab like the dancers in the video" SB

Maths: Data Handling

We have been on a mission! We visited Reception Class to find out the way they travel to school and Year 2 to find out their favourite fruit. We had to use a tally chart to record their responses.

The Reception children stood up when they wanted to vote and we counted how many children there were standing up.

In Year 2, the children put their hands up and we had to count how many children voted!

[19th January 2016]

Sea Life London Aquarium

Today we visited the Sea Life London Aquarium and we LOVED it!

We were able to see a variety of sea creatures including fish, sea horses, sting rays and even sharks!

We were very lucky to have a lady called Zoe who spoke to us about the animals that live under the sea. She told us all about the different oceans and we learnt that each ocean can be a different temperature.

She explained that "the sea near the North Pole is colder than the sea near Africa!" - HK

Zoe helped us learn how different animals adapt to live in or near the sea. We played a game where we had to guess if the adaptation was for the Seahorse or a Penguin.

HK and EI helped us visualise this by dressing up!

Can you guess which one is which?

Then, we got busy and designed our own fish!

We agreed that we wanted our fish to be strong and scary to fight off predators so it wouldn't get eaten. Can you see the features of our fish that do this?

We wondered our way through the aquarium in awe at all the species we could see. We were minding our own business when suddenly a huge fish came to say hi!

Wow!!

After that, we went to visit the penguins! It was very exciting.

One penguin wanted to share some of A-LB water! Unfortunately we weren't allowed, however, Mr Penguin wasn't upset with us as he sang us a song instead! Can you see him singing to us?

We had a fantastic day. On the way back to school we had a class vote on the best part of the day. It was a very close call between the penguins and the crocodile (and even lunch time) but the winner was definitely...

THE SHARKS!

Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to share their day with us today. Thank you also to Father Steven, our class Governor for spending the day with us!

[15th January 2016]

Busy! Busy! Busy!

We have had a lot of celebrations in the past week. We had a successful certificate assembly celebrating the success of our learning for the whole of last term. Well done to all of Year 1 for a good start to learning and always coming to school with a positive attitude and lots of energy!

In maths, we have been investigating a resource that is new to us as we haven't used it before so we were very excited!

It is called Cuisenaire. Some children agreed that it is similar to Numicon. Nevertheless, we had so much fun using it and we can't wait to use it again much more in the future!

KN- "We had to make 8. First we had to find which one was the number 8. Then we used all the other colours to make them the same length as the number 8. Then we had to make number sentences for the colours we had used. I found lots but my favourite number sentence is the one where I have used four red ones. My number sentence would be 2 + 2 + 2+ 2. That makes 8!"

[08 January 2016]

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to school, I hope you have enjoyed the Christmas break.

Year 1 are in full swing with their learning and have returned to school very eager and more determined than ever!

Our topic for this half term is Water World. We will be learning about the different uses for water and looking at how water is used around the world.

We will even be looking at animals that live in water because we are going to the London Aquarium! We can't wait!

This week, we used the iPads and did some research on water. This helped us come up with some questions we would love to find the answers to.

Why does water look blue in the sea but when we drink it, it's see through? - BJ, VW, KN

Why is water slippery? ZD-A

Why is water good for us? KL-B

How comes sometimes water is cold but sometimes it's hot? AW

We can't wait to progress more with our topic- there is so much to learn!

[11th December 2015]

It's Christmas Time!

Year 1 are truly excited and ready for Christmas!

Before our Christmas celebrations begun, we had our class assembly on Friday and it was great!

We are very grateful for all those parents who made it to see us in action. For those that missed it, we shared the learning we have done in class on celebrations. Then we focused on our learning in RE around the story of Noah's Ark.

"I was nervous I would forget my lines but I didn't and I'm happy with how it went"- AL-B

"I had a lot of lines but I did my best" - ZD-A

"I liked our class assembly. It was fun!" - KL-B.

We have been busy getting ready for our school Christmas Fair which was a success!

Come back to find out how much the school raised! Thank you to all parents who visited Year One's stall for snowmen and decorations!

[4th December 2015]

The Bear and the Hare

Next week (wc 07th Dec) we will begin our new unit in English: The Bear and The Hare. You may have seen this lovely Christmas story before as it is a TV advert from 2013!

This weekends homework is linked to the following video. Children should write about their opinions on the video.

Click the link below and enjoy!

The Bear and the Hare Christmas Story

Did you like the story?

Which parts do you like?

Why do you think the bear is sad?

Why do you think the hare was so kind?

[02nd December 2015]

We are currently VERY busy practicing for our class assembly! Don't forget it is this Friday 4th December in the school hall at 9.10am.

See you there!

[27th November 2015]

We LOVE Maths!

We have learnt about 3D shapes and their properties.

At the beginning of the week we did not know the meaning of some tricky words like 'edges', 'faces' or 'vertices'. However we tried our best at recognising these on a 3D shape and soon enough we knew what these special words meant!

Here are our definitions written in our own words:

We also made some 3D shapes using a range of materials. After a class vote, we agreed that using spaghetti, jelly babies and marshmallows were the best (and most exciting!) way to make 3D shapes.

[20th November 2015]

Maths Week

This week in Year One we have been very busy solving problems using our knowledge of number and place value!

Here is one investigation we have looked at:

The brown basket has one more egg in it than the red basket.

The red basket has three fewer eggs than the pink basket.

How many eggs are in each basket?

It took us a while and we worked in pairs but we finally discovered the answer!

Do you know how many eggs should be in each basket?

Next week we will be looking at shape and measure.

How many shapes can you find at home?

[13th November 2015]

On Monday morning we were feeling astonished to find a very strange box in our classroom.  It appeared strange and we weren't too sure if we should open it or not. However, our curiosity got the better of us and we couldn't help ourselves!

We were quite unsure about what we were letting ourselves in for so some children suggested some rules before we took anything out.

"We really should be quiet because we don't want to scare it!" LD-W

When we took the contents out we were very surprised to find an egg!

"Where did this egg come from?

What did it feel like?

How did it get here?"

We had a lot of questions to ask! So we decided to write to the egg and ask them all!

Later in the week, we started our new book BUT we haven't been told the name of the story and we haven't begun to read it yet!

However, we have looked at some of the pictures taken from the book to stimulate our minds...

What is he looking at?

What can he see?

What can we see?

We used our senses and wrote about what the boy in the picture might feel, see, smell, taste and hear.

"I can see a sad, grey moon" - AL-B

"I can touch an icy window" -TT

"I can smell my Mum's food from the kitchen" -MA-M

Our homework this week is to write about what we think the story is going to be about.

Next week we will begin to read the story,

finally....

This week we began our new topic LET'S CELEBRATE!

We have discussed all the different celebrations we enjoy with our friends and families. We found out lots of us really enjoy our birthdays! Some of us prefer Christmas and a few love going to weddings and christenings.

We even had a little celebration of our own!

[04th November 2015]

Welcome Back after the half term break!

We hope you have had a well earned rest.

RE and Art Week

This week we have started our new RE topic "Noah's Ark"

As it is RE and Art week this week (03 Nov- 06 Nov), we have combined our knowledge of the story Noah's Ark and our artistic skills!

We have begun by looking at images of the story which were brought to us through a workshop by a company called Magic Lantern. They showed us artwork of the story from all around the world and we really enjoyed looking at them!

We even enjoyed pretending to be the artists and used our paint palettes to recreate the images.

We even pretended to be the animals and created speech bubbles thinking what they might have said.

Overall, we really loved Magic Lantern coming in to show us the artwrork- thank you!

LD-W "Noah is always the biggest in the pictures. His arms are stretched out!"

ZD-A "God said take 2 of every animal so they could make babies when the flood is over and the world can be back to how it was with lots of animals"

[23rd October 2015]

Diversity Picnic

We really enjoyed our diversity picnic and said a prayer to thank all the parents and helpers who contributed to our day.

We ate lots of food from around the world!

We had:

  • Plantain from the Carribean and Africa
  • Jellof rice from Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone
  • A victoria sponge from Britain

For black history month, we were lucky enough to have parents come in to talk to us about Nelson Mandela and some black inventors!

We found this very exciting and learnt a lot of new information about where things we use today come from!

ZD-A- "Today I learnt who invented the pencil sharpener"

KN- "At first, I thought Nelson Mandela was a bad man because he got arrested but now I know he did those things so people could be free"

[20th October 2015]

This week Coach O came and taught us how to dance to our favourite song in PE!

Do you know the song?

We also experienced a new type of learning resource called Now Press Play. We had special head phones which encouraged us to use role play to stimulate our minds. Today, we listened to the seasons track to link to our Science topic.

We had to find Jack Frost because he had stolen our seasons clock! He made it winter all year round but we found it too cold! We agreed that having 4 seasons throughout the year is a good idea as it give us a good balance.

[15th October 2015]

This week we were very lucky to have visited The V & A Museum of Childhood!

We enjoyed our time there and got very busy with all the fantastic activities available at the museum.

Even Jackson the Bear enjoyed himself on the trip! Can you spot him in our photos?

We saw lots of bears from the past that we have been learning about in class. Can you guess which original bear we saw?

He looks very different to how we know him to look today!
