Art and Design

Our approach to Art and Design is rooted in our Christian vision that every child is a unique gift from God and shaped by our core values of Love, Faith and Hope. At Christ Church, we believe art provides every child with the opportunity to express themselves creatively, develop confidence and explore the world through imagination, reflection and personal response.

Using the Kapow Art and Design scheme to support progression and curriculum design, pupils develop their artistic knowledge, skills and creativity progressively from EYFS to Year 6. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build understanding in drawing, painting, sculpture, printing and mixed media while introducing pupils to a diverse range of artists, styles and artistic traditions. This reflects the school’s wider commitment to a broad, ambitious and knowledge-rich curriculum identified within our SEF.

Through Art and Design, pupils are encouraged to experiment, take creative risks and develop resilience through the artistic process. Teachers model key techniques, vocabulary and processes clearly so pupils can develop confidence and increasing independence in their work. Pupils learn to evaluate and refine their ideas while developing pride in their achievements.

Our curriculum reflects the diversity of the world and celebrates a wide range of artists and creative influences. Pupils explore artwork from different cultures, communities and historical periods, helping them to develop curiosity, appreciation and respect for different perspectives and forms of expression. Carefully chosen artists and themes allow pupils to both see themselves reflected within the curriculum and broaden their understanding of creativity beyond their own experiences.

We further enrich our art curriculum through specialist workshops and community partnerships, including opportunities to work with staff and students from Streatham & Clapham High School. These sessions provide pupils with access to specialist teaching, wider artistic experiences and aspirational opportunities that help nurture creativity and confidence.

We believe art should be accessible and enjoyable for all pupils. Teachers adapt activities through modelling, scaffolding and practical support so pupils with SEND and EAL can fully participate and experience success alongside their peers. Classrooms encourage individuality and celebrate each child’s unique ideas and creative voice.

Art and Design contributes strongly to pupils’ wider personal development and wellbeing. Opportunities for reflection, collaboration and self-expression help pupils build confidence, emotional literacy and resilience while encouraging them to appreciate beauty, diversity and creativity within the world around them.

Assessment is used to support pupils in developing both technical skills and creative understanding over time. Leaders monitor curriculum implementation through sketchbooks, pupil voice and lesson visits to ensure learning is progressive, ambitious and meaningful for all learners.

Through our Art and Design curriculum, we aim to develop curious, confident and reflective learners who value creativity, express themselves with confidence and appreciate the diverse artistic contributions that shape our world.
