Mathematics at Christ Church

Our approach to teaching mathematics is rooted in our Christian vision that every child is a unique gift from God and shaped by our core values of Love, Faith and Hope. At Christ Church, we believe all children can succeed in mathematics through high-quality teaching, strong relationships and carefully sequenced learning that builds confidence and fluency over time.

Mathematics is taught through a coherent and progressive curriculum using White Rose Maths, alongside Mastering Number in Key Stage 1, to ensure pupils develop secure foundational knowledge and strong number sense. Leaders have prioritised fluency, recall of key number facts and mathematical reasoning so pupils are able to apply their understanding confidently across the curriculum. This aligns closely with our SEF focus on securing foundational knowledge from EYFS onwards.

Teachers use clear modelling, scaffolding and targeted questioning to support pupils in understanding new concepts before moving towards greater independence. Regular formative assessment helps identify misconceptions quickly so that support can be adapted responsively to meet pupils’ needs.

We believe mathematics should be accessible to all learners. Adaptive teaching, carefully planned interventions and the use of practical resources support pupils with SEND and EAL to access learning successfully alongside their peers. Additional support is closely aligned to classroom teaching to help pupils “keep up” and build confidence.

Across the school, pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, reason mathematically and discuss different approaches. This helps develop resilience, confidence and deeper understanding. Teachers create positive classroom environments where mistakes are viewed as part of learning and pupils feel safe to challenge themselves and persevere.

Strong teaching of foundational knowledge begins in the Early Years, where early counting and mathematical talk are prioritised through structured teaching and purposeful opportunities for practice. This strong foundation supports pupils in achieving highly in mathematics over time, including in the Multiplication Tables Check, where outcomes have been consistently above national averages.

Through our mathematics curriculum, we aim not only to develop secure mathematical knowledge and skills, but also confident, reflective learners who approach challenge with resilience, curiosity and hope.

Numbots and Times Tables Rock Stars

We know the importance of children being arithmetically fluent and recalling their multiplication and division facts at speed and with accuracy. In order to help children with learning these facts in a fun and engaging way, we subscribe to 'Times Tables Rock Stars'.
