Music at Christ Church

Our approach to teaching music is rooted in our Christian vision that every child is a unique gift from God and shaped by our core values of Love, Faith and Hope. At Christ Church, we believe music is a powerful form of expression that helps children develop confidence, creativity, discipline and a sense of belonging within the wider community.
Using the Kapow Music scheme to support progression and curriculum design, pupils develop their musical knowledge and skills progressively from EYFS to Year 6. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build understanding in listening, performing, composing and appraising music while exposing pupils to a wide range of musical styles, traditions and cultures. This reflects the school’s wider commitment to a broad, ambitious and knowledge-rich curriculum identified within our SEF.
Music is further enriched through our strong partnership with Lambeth Music Service, which provides whole-class instrumental tuition for pupils across the school. Children have opportunities to learn instruments including trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute and percussion, with drum tuition also available. These specialist lessons help pupils develop musical technique, teamwork, resilience and performance confidence while broadening access to high-quality musical experiences.
Specialist tutors from Lambeth Music Service also provide opportunities for families to access subsidised small-group or individual instrumental tuition beyond the school day, helping pupils further develop their musical talents and interests.
We are proud of our wider musical partnerships, including our collaboration with Streatham & Clapham High School, whose staff and students support the development of our Year 3 choir through specialist singing sessions and performance opportunities. These experiences help raise aspirations and strengthen pupils’ confidence as performers.
Performance is a central part of our music curriculum and wider school life. Pupils regularly perform in assemblies, worship and community events, and our choir performs annually at the Royal Festival Hall. These opportunities help pupils develop confidence, pride and a strong sense of achievement while fostering teamwork and community spirit.
We believe music should be accessible and enjoyable for all pupils. Teachers and specialist tutors adapt learning carefully so pupils with SEND and EAL can fully participate and experience success alongside their peers. Lessons encourage creativity, collaboration and self-expression within a supportive and inclusive environment.
Assessment and performance opportunities are used to support pupils’ musical development over time, helping teachers identify next steps and celebrate achievement. Leaders monitor curriculum implementation through pupil voice, lesson visits and participation in musical enrichment to ensure music remains ambitious, engaging and inclusive for all learners.
Through our music curriculum, we aim to develop confident, creative and reflective musicians who appreciate the power of music to inspire, connect communities and enrich their lives.
Psalms 57:7. 7 My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music.
