Free school Meals / Pupil Premium

Pupils who parents are entitled to benefits are entitled to FSM:-

Your child might be able to get free school meals if you are in receipt of any of the following:

  • Income Support
  • Income Based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit, provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by HM Revenue and Customs) that does not exceed £16,190
  • Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get).

If you do not qualify for most benefits (also known as having ‘no recourse to public funds’), your child may still be eligible for free school meals. Ask their school or local authority whether they’re eligible.

If your child is eligible for free school meals, they’ll remain eligible until they finish the phase of schooling (primary or secondary).

Pupil Premium (PP)
Pupil Premium is a government initiative that targets extra money at pupils from deprived backgrounds, which research shows underachieve compared to their non-deprived peers. The Pupil Premium is provided in order to support these pupils in reaching their potential.

The Government uses pupils who are entitled to Free School Meals (FSM) as an indicator for deprivation, and the Government gives the school funding based on the number of pupils registered for Free School Meals.

Pupil Premium includes pupils who are currently entitled to Free School Meals and/or received Free School Meals in the past 6 years.  Therefore it is very important that parents who are entitled to FSM still complete the necessary paperwork especially if the entitlement is new.
