At Christ Church, we recognise how Physical Education impacts on the health and well-being of all children. We aim to create an innovative, effective and varied Physical Education curriculum that has a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all children. We believe children should develop a confidence and an interest in exercise and physical activities during school, and should continue these as part of their daily lives. We aim to establish a whole school culture based around health, fitness and well-being so children and staff can understand and apply the long-term benefits gained from taking part in physical activity.

3 John, Chapter 1, V2 - I pray that all will go well with you and that you may be in good health as it goes well with your soul.

Our Intent for Physical Education

At Christ Church, we aim to develop pupils who will be physically active and can flourish in a range of different physical activities.
The aims of our PE curriculum are to develop pupils who:
  • are willing to practise skills in a range of different activities and situations, alone, in
    small groups and in teams, and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve
    exceptionally high levels of performance;
  • have and maintain high levels physical fitness;
  • lead a healthy lifestyle which is achieved by eating sensibly, being aware of the
    dangers of drugs, smoking and alcohol and exercising regularly;
  • are able to remain physically active for sustained periods of time and have an
    understanding of the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-
    being;
  • take the initiative and become excellent young leaders, organising and officiating,
    and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, and motivating and instilling
    excellent sporting attitudes in others;
  • employ imagination and creativity in their techniques, tactics and choreography
  • are able to improve their own and others’ performance;
  • can work independently for extended periods of time without the need for guidance
    or support;
  • have a keen interest in PE - a willingness to participate eagerly in every lesson, highly positive attitudes and the ability to make informed choices about engaging fully in extracurricular sport;
  • can swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and know how to remain safe in and around water.

How we Implement our PE Curriculum

We have a professional coach from Moving Matters delivering high quality PE to every class.  This session is also high quality professional development for our teachers supporting their ability to deliver high quality PE independently.  Coach Shawn will support and involve our teachers in the delivery of all areas of PE enabling them to deliver another high quality session independently at a different point in the week.

Our Planned Impact

Our curriculum provides a positive impact on pupil progress and performance. By implementing a collaborative partnership model with our on site Coach from Moving Matters, we can ensure that every lesson is differentiated based on outcomes of the previous lesson, resulting in all pupils making good progress rather than just following a set scheme. Confidence, discipline, teamwork, fitness and more will increase as a result of well-planned, well-structured and well-delivered lessons. We model pupil outcomes through:

  • A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes;
  • A celebration of learning for each term which demonstrates progression across the
    school;
  • Pupil discussions about their learning;
  • The tracking of standards across the curriculum.
